Rise of Tiamat, Session 3
2-5-2015

Elesian 26th

As the party proceeds forward, Rudiger triggers a pressure plate, causing a large sphere composed of bones to roll down the ramp behind them. It grabs some of the adventurers and causes a lot of damage. Niri is knocked unconscious but revived by Fallon.

Didarius’s voice rings out again, with a phrase about humility. Torcon remembers that this reminds him of a gesture particular to Mystral. As the adventurers proceed through the door, they perform a small ritual to Mystral, seemingly bypassing a trap.

In the next room is a 12 foot tall humanoid male on a throne surrounded by a large pile of treasure. This looks like it could be Didarius but huge. The statue speaks, demanding tribute for answers to questions. Fen Long lays down a bit of copper and asks the whereabouts of Verym. The statue ignores the question.

Deciding to explore onward before trying again, the party inspects another door near the entrance to the dungeon. On the door is a magical, animated image of Didarius. Rudiger believes there may be a cave in on the other side of the door. As expected, when the door is opened, a cave in is revealed as even more rubble falls into the room.

The party returns to he statue room and inspects the second door. It is a library, emptied of its contents. . Upon entrance to this room, the statue rises up, showing “Intruders!!”, and shows hostile intent.

During the battle, A ghost pops up in the hallway where some members are fighting from afar. She tells us we should have all given tribute. Upon defeating the golem, Ilda, the neurotic librarian ghost, attacks because the party attempts to take the treasure. Fen Long manages to calm the ghost, but not before she has artificially aged Niri and Rudiger.

A hidden door is found in the hallway, masking a dumbwaiter that drops down into a stairwell. Upon descent, the adventurers find a door behind which they hear talking. Opening it, they find a room full of ghosts and spectres.

January 28 2015

With Leosin Erlanthar’s urging, the party decides to pursue the white dragon mask and it’s bearer, a shield dwarf. It is rumored the dwarf has lost the mask in the vicinity of Boareskyr Bridge.

Elesias 20

Upon travelling there, the party discovers a tent settlement has sprung up around the bridge, catering to travelers on the busy road. The party stops at one of the few buildings in the area, Bolo’s Inn – a rowdy rough and tumble establishment catering to travelers and merchants. The barkeep, Bolo himself, describes a dwarf in purple robes who killed a presumed Yaun-ti (note – it isn’t “Juan-ti”, Katie, ay diosssssss mio! Don’t forget to roll the s’s. -ed) in the bar and then headed to the hills. The settlement believes the dwarf a hero for his actions. Through aerial scouting, the party has a general idea of where he went and when, and will try to catch up tomorrow.

Elesias 21st

The party follows the trail uneventfully for 6 hours, resting midday. That afternoon, there is some confusion on the path taken by the dwarf and his followers. After some discussion, the party decides on a path and follows it, uneventfully, until evening.

Elesias 22nd

A flock of large birds is seen in the distance. Vultures of some sort, that seem to be circling. On investigation, the party finds a clearing with bodies of lizard folk and adventurers. Attempting to search the bodies, the vultures descend and try to protect their food. A well placed fireball ends the vulture’s threat, though there is nothing of note on the bodies.

Elesias 23rd

In the afternoon, the adventurers come across an old abandoned shrine to Mystral. Laucian performs a ritual and gets inspiration.

Elesias 24th

Uneventful Travel.

Elesias 25th

In the morning, the party comes upon a resting place, a fairly recently made unmarked grave. Using Speak with Dead, Niri discovers it is Gallant Longstryder. He utters that he was killed by poison by snake people. His next of kin is Alan Longstyder of Waterdeep. Laucian uses a Sending to inform the council of the death and next of kin.

During first watch, three young women, in tattered rags and emaciated, stumble into our camp. They try to run, but are too weak. The women want to get back to their home, Brightland. They had been captured by lizard men who took them to the snake men. On further discussion, the adventurers learn that there was a nearby tomb from which they escaped. The party finds a safe place for them to hide and do a sending to Winterhound to request evacuation. It will take 12 days for someone to rescue them. The party attempts to convince the women to stay hidden and not try to keep running, and that they will attempt to pick them up on the return trip.

Elesian 26th

By midmorning the party reaches their destination. Remains of a tomb w/ a crumbling fountain, walls, statues, carvings, etc. Present are a smoldering campfire and 7 shallow graves.The graves are those of cultists, but not a dwarf.

On examining the statues, they move and warn that the adventurers come before Didarius, Etherwalker and conduit of clairvoyance. Didarius extends wisdom and knowledge, we must choose. He will give the party what we seek if we show proper respect. The statue stops moving and returns to normal. Didarius seems to have been a diviner who scrys into the planes.

There is treasure in the antichamber.

Pressing further in, Didarius’ voice informs the partyto look away from the dark spaces. They avert their eyes and press on. The next room contains a magical mosaic on the floor. As the party walks across it, the pieces move and a mosaic chimera assembles before them. It is destroyed, and the adventurers explore a weird room w/ a water-stealing fountain.

January 21 2015

Elesias (Highsign) 9th

Party is on floating castle with Blagothkus headed toward Spine of the World. A messenger bird brings a scroll of teleport from Leosin. Included is a message urging the parties’ presence at a council of leaders from the Sword Coast, intent on dealing with the threat of the Cult of the Dragon.

On arrival in Waterdeep, the party meets with Leosin at the Dragons’ Head tavern, where they spend the night on his coin. The party researches magic items and liquidates some gems. From Leosin, they learn that Arthagast Ulbrinter, a masked lord of Waterdeep, has been murdered by the cult. The death is the talk of the town.

As the party goes about their business, an odd, silent, uncomfortable, possibly magical “funk” settles over the town for a brief time. It then dissipates, like a barometric pressure change. It is noticed by all and seems very peculiar.

Elesias 10

The party arrives to the council and speaks with Leosin. He informs them the council is concerned about the army massing at the Well of the Dragons. The council is composed of not only leaders of nations, but leaders of important factions, including the Harpers. This is a political group – everyone has their own aims and intent.

As the party arrives at the council chamber, Leosin points out the members:

Remallia Haventree – Female Moon Elf, Harper – trusted friend of Leosin. Her husband was Arthagast Ulbrinter, the slain masked lord of Waterdeep.

Ontharr Frume – Dwarf Knight that engaged party with arm wrestling previously. Leader of Order of the Gauntlet. Has a positive impression of party from previous dealings.

Delaan Winterhound – (Type?) Elven Ranger – Uncomfortable in the city, dressed for the Woods. Represents the Emerald Enclave. Would be a valuable ally, represents Druids and Rangers. Friends with ancient Truant named Groot Turlang

Lord Dagult Neverember – Human leader of Neverwinter, Open Lord of Waterdeep. Statesman, powerful, might be overburdened in leading two major cities and the council. Would make a powerful Ally, and would command mercenaries and troops from around the world.

Ambassador Connerad Brawnanvil – Dwarf – Represents Mithral Hall and Citadel Adbar, Feldbar. Focused on interests of the dwarves and the kingdoms of the North.

King Melandrach – Moon Elf – King of the Misty Forest, Moon Elves. Commands Elven eldritch knights. Hauty, seeming racial supremacist, but fair minded.

Marshall Ulder Ravengard – Human – He LEADS the Flaming Fist!, official militia of Baldur’s Gate. Commands more military might than anyone on the council. Would be excellent to lead armies into battle. Master tactician.

Taern “Thunderspells” Hornblade – Very old Human Wizard – defended Silverymoon and led it for centuries. Now their representative. City is protected by powerful Mythals. Commands the army of Silverymoon and Knights in Silver.

Sir Isteval – Human Paladin of Torm – Retired adventurer, walks with limp that cannot be magically healed. More experience with Dragon slaying than anyone on council. Reputation as very trustworthy, would make a valuable ally.

Party joins the council. Lord Neverember starts the meeting, accurately recapping parties exploits over the past few month in helping to thwart the cult. Complimentary and impressed with their efforts, as are Sir Isteval, Ulter Ravengard, and Ontharr Frume. Neverember states that unity in the room is a boon, with an obvious subtext.

Brawnanvil questions how the party could allow the giants to go to the Spine of the World unopposed, as they are a great threat into themselves. He seems concerned that giants will rise up and wipe out or enslave the Dwarven kingdoms.

Some council members question the party’s allies of convenience – Isteval and Ontharr.

Remallia expresses concern over the party’s slaying of Resmir, the black dragon wyrm speaker. She believes the party should have captured him instead, for interrogation or to use as a hostage. The party defends their action stating they had to fight a dragon, and had no means to capture and hold him at the time. While Remallia seems to accept the explanation, she implores the party to attempt to capture, rather than kill, in the future. At this, Fen Long rolls his eyes. Remallia and Neverember seem to be ok with him, but Ontharr and Isteval less so.

Winterhound is upset about the natural order of things and the party’s destruction of the dragon eggs. Dalgult believes the eggs should have been sold. Ulder concurs. Hornblade defends the party’s actions, bringing up the difficulty in transporting them. Party defends themselves as well.

Hornblade begins to question Isteval and how he used to work for the Purple Dragons of Cormyr. Isteval, surprisingly, states he does represent Cormyr, and therefore the War Wizards and Purple Dragons as well.

Party attempts to describe to the council the level of organization and dedication shown by the4 cult, as well as the need for unity. Emphasizes the severity of the threat of the Cult, stating that even the Zhents seem concerned.

King Melandrach agrees and states they are equally concerned, but the council should not be rash. He believes as long as the party has the Black Dragon Mask, the cult cannot raise Tiamat. He seems only concerned about the Elves.

The councils asks to see the mask, which the party produces. There is some debate on who should protect the mask. Most of the council members feel they are the best candidate to protect the mask, while the party believes the mask should be destroyed. Laucian Naito suggests a subcommittee for dealing with the mask, suspecting the subcommittee actually deciding on a course of action will make the temporary guardian of the mask effectively it’s protector. The party will guard the mask in the meantime.

The party also states intent to research the ritual required for raising Tiamat, concerned that killing one speaker and holding one mask may not be sufficient to halt the ritual.

Lady Dala Silmerhelve joins the council at the invite of Lord Neverember. She is a Waterdeep noble. Silmerhelve mentions the odd disturbance from the previous day and states that it is a result of the Draakhorn – an item that summons dragons that will be noticed all along the Sword Coast.

The council bestows a writ on the party to act on their behalf. After the council, they will meet with Lady Dala to get more information. Ontharr is nominated to lead the subcommittee for party ethics.

Degald calls for a motion to pool resources to move toward the Well of Dragons. Isteval says they are marshaling for war, but not yet committed. Ulder says Baldur’s Gate will commit only to training at the time. The Order of the Gauntlet, lead by Ontharr, is ready to march against the dragons.

Delaan Winterhound belives the rising of the Dragons is the natural order of events an will not support the party. Connorad says the dwarves are too concerned with the possibility of the Giants rising up to deal with the Dragons. King Melandrach is unconcerned, but keeping an eye on things. Remallia agrees that now is the time for gathering information and will direct her resources into doing so. Melandrach agrees to assist in this, and at Laucian’s request, will assist with the aid of magical scrying.

Dagult and Neverember seem to be riding the fenc.

After the council, Leosin pulls the party aside and says that Remallia has found out that Verym, the White Dragonspeaker, was spotted at the Boaresker bridge – the spot where Cyric killed Baal and took over the portfolio of death during the Time of Troubles. He is the person Talis angry with for being picked Dragonspeaker over her.

After some research, it is learned that the ritual can succeed without all 5 masks, though it is easier and possibly more powerful with them. The party decides to leave the mask with the council, specifically Thunderspells, for protection.

The members of the party break out to speak to council members one on one. Rudiger Fahlenbrach speaks with Ontharr. Ontharr isn’t sure if he would have destroyed the dragon eggs, but he knows it was a difficult decision made with limited resources. He reiterates the party should have captured Resmir for interrogation. Rudy and Ontharr converse for a while, fostering some camaraderie.

It is decided the party needs to work on Brawnanvil, Isteval and Winterhound.

Laucian speaks with Winterhound, who is profoundly upset with the party’s destruction of the black dragon eggs.

He’s still hung up on the baby dragons. Good fucking god. He won’t shut up about it.

He thinks Tiahmet might be a cleansing. He’s fucking Kirk Cameron. This is Left Behind for him.

He’s goddamn Westboro Baptist.

He’s willing to talk to us though and is totally amicable.

Isteval and Niri Garask speak. He suggests the party show their mettle, proving themselves with deeds, not words. Bring the council results, in the form of dragon heads if possible. He believes the party did the right thing with the White Dragon and seems overall supportive.

For now we will keep the great sword and insignia of claws. The other loot is liquidated and 3 doses of revivify on hand.

Fen Long will gather information on the council utilizing his shadowy contacts.

Arrive in Daggerford. This is the last overnight stay in a town until we arrive in Waterdeep.

First day outside of Daggerford, a female gnome is showing interest in a human in the cultist caravan. She is hanging out near the caravan, trying not to be noticed. Torkon is sure that she realizes that he has his eye on her. Torkon confronts her as they parrot each other’s questions. They agree to talk later, after Torkon reveals he is not “friends” with the cultists. Gemna Gleamsilver is the gnomes name.

Day 52-55

Gemna swipes Torkon’s gruel, poking through it with a dagger. She uncovers a rolled up bone, intended to poison the oatmeal, and informs Torkon it’s likely the entire party’s oatmeal is poisoned. The party investigates their own food and finds other foreign objects, though it’s immediately unclear if they are actually poison or not. The party does not eat. That evening, Gemna asks the party if they found anything else in their food. She says she shares the goal of stopping the cult and works for mercantile interests. She wants to work with the party to sneak into the wagons tonight and find out what the cultists are up to. It is believed she works for the Zentarim. She needs to report back to her superiors what they are taking and where they are taking it. TP agrees to work with her, tells her what’s in the wagons. They’ll stay separate for now so as to avoid suspicion.

Day 57

The party wakes to the sound of people screaming “murder.” Cultists are heading toward the adventurers. A cultists points to Fen Long and says “murderer and thief.” His party member has been killed by a sword or some sort, but looks like it couldn’t be a rapier, as Fen Long carries. The cultist levies all kinds of accusations against the party. Simon, the cultist, is inconsolable despite a man who joined the caravan in Daggerford trying to talk sense into him. But as people start asking the cultists to show their wares and tell what has been stolen, they pipe down and things calm down. Niri notices that Gemna has been conspicuously absent this morning despite her having been present the last few days.

Day 59

The caravan arrives in Waterdeep. Gemna meets back up with the adventurers. She says the cult is heading north out of town. TP will keep up with them. Gemna was most likely responsible for the murder of the cultist. Azbara Jos, the man in robes who spoke sense at that time, continues to travel with the cultists. They’re joining up with another caravan which is most likely heading toward Neverwinter. Laucian tries to buy a sleep spell from a wizard named Peryton. Peryton wants 100 gp and to trade spells. Fen Long makes contact with his contact to send word to Neverwinter to find out about the cultists arriving. The party joins up with this new caravan.

Day 61

The party heads out with the new caravan, containing 6 supply wagons and various staff and guards.

The cultists are keeping an eye on TP. This should be a 10 day journey.

The party is ambushed by lizardfolk, which are defeated.

A troll attacks the caravan. the party kills it before it reaches the group.

Two Ogres charge the caravan. The party kills them, but not before Torkon critically misses one and it throws his ax 30 feet behind him.

Day 28

Kython 17

Laucian has been studying his manuscript and this morning a female human approaches. She is solid green, but otherwise attractive. She has noticed the manuscript and wants to buy it. Laucian of course says it’s not for sale. She thinks it has something to due with her condition. She is flustered and leaves at his refusal. He secures the manuscript moving forward as she seems to be eyeing him.

Rest of the day uneventful.

Day 29

Kython 18

Laucian wakes up to find the manuscript is gone. He freaks out. He begins asking after the girl and finds her walking. She asks if he has come to sell her the book and claims innocence. Laucian charms her and she is telling the truth. Laucian remembers that there were a few people around during the conversation about the book. A quiet gnome, a female guard, a female shield dwarf who is a bitch. Laucian begins to question the guards for his own shipment if they saw any of the people around last night. Eldkin Edgetool, a persnickity guard lectures Laucian that he should have done a better job guarding his book. She explains that that another guard from another caravan and her were switching places that night. Turns out it was one of the ones who heard the conversation the day before. The bitchy shield dwarf, Tygit Skesh, was the one who was guarding that night.

Laucian detects something magical on Tygit as he approaches. She says she didn’t see anything last night and seems to be telling the truth. When questioned, the magic appears to be radiating from her ax. Tygit is angered by the intrusion.

The other guard who overheard the conversation does not detect as magical.

Laucian seeks out the aforementioned gnome. He detects something magical underneath the wagon. He approaches and asks if the gnome saw anything around his wagon. The gnome is not forthcoming.

Laucian approaches the merchant for this wagon. There is also a gargoyle perched on the seat of the wagon. The merchant is also unwilling to chat, but seems reserved rather than hostile.

At lunch break, Laucian asks Fen Long to check out the wagon. He finds the false bottom, opens it and finds the manuscript. He closes it back to make it look undisturbed and successfully returns the book to Laucian.

Laucian now takes extraordinary precautions w/ the book and informs the gnome, Radecere Perethun that if Laucian finds the book missing again, he will kill him. The gnome shows no reaction. Eldkin seems distraught with her failure to guard the caravan. In the future, she promises to be extra careful, as does Laucian. Just for the record, she does not want to have sex with him. Tygit also does not want to have sex with Laucian. He apologizes to her for accusing her and they’re good. Still no sex on the table.

Day 30

The merchant from the wagon Radecere was riding with approaches Laucian and says he has told the gnome to leave his group. The merchant, Lasfero, tells a joke as a means to make amends. The joke seems to indicate that Lasfero does want to have sex with Laucian.

Day 31 – 36

Day 37

It’s a beautiful sunny summer afternoon, when the party sees a heard of deer running though the field. Amongst them is a huge golden deer. Fallon remarks that it would be really bad if the guards/hunters killed this good omen. The party tries to spread the word to kill all the deer they want, but not the stag. Only three hunters don’t get the word or understand. Fallon seems to think it would be super bad to kill this god-touched magnificent beast.

The party tries to catch up w/ the hunters and shout at them to stop. Laucian levitates the leader of the little party and tries to get them to think it is the wrath of Malechi. They believe it and fall off, the stag tries to get the party to chase it into the woods, they do. In this copse of trees, the stag stops and speaks to us. It says “You’re on the right track. Must follow river of gold until reach the castle in the sky. Sadly the path will be filled with hardship and blood. Not all will survive.”

Floating down from the sky is a beautiful longbow covered in leaves and vines. It is Amandil, the heart of courage. He says not all of us will survive. The party takes the magical bow, probably for Fen Long. As Fen Long picks it up, he notices it is incredibly light and gives him the ability to understand elvin. He also feels invulnerable while holding the bow.

Day 38 – 39

That night, party rolls into a town, has drinks in a tavern. Samardag is talking to a really well equipped group of 4 adventurers.

Day 41

In the morning, Samardag lets the party know he has hired those new people as guards. They’re cheaper and better he says. He’s trying to be nice, but he seems to have made up his mind. Niri tells Samardag she understands and to let her know if he needs anything. The party will ride w/ Laucian’s group. Fen Long tells him he will keep an eye on the new hires and if they cross Samardag, they’ll be dealt with.

Later that day, the party notices Peyrtons circling over Samardag’s wagon. One swoops down and attacks the wagon, grabs the wizard and the other new hires scatter while screaming. The adventurers run to Sam’s assistance while experiencing quite a bit of schadenfreude. They are successful and realize that the new hires were in fact actors. They are distraught over their mage that was killed. Sam admits his error and hires the party back at double the rate and w/ a guaranteed contract.

Day 42 – Day 45

Starting two days ago, all day and night storms, wind, and eerie sounds could be heard. The party finally falls asleep after 2 days of not sleeping well at all. Even the guards fall asleep. When everyone wakes they are surrounded by small mushrooms. They look like shriekers, but very small. Some of them are convinced they are deadly poisonous and if they are stepped on will cause death in a couple hours. Samardag steps on some and tiny shrieks go up.

As the group debates, the mushrooms grow. Laucian tries to get everyone to leave, believing them harmless. He is not convincing enough and everyone is scared and stays put. Laucian rides through, but as he does so he starts to freak out from the screams. He finally collapses to the ground and has a breakdown about his own mass murder of the mushrooms. Chaos ensues.

After about an hour, the mushrooms are about a foot tall. Niri tries to examine Laucian while Fen Long tries to take his book to keep it safe. Torcon rages and tries to cut them all down. He actually has more luck and clears a path in front of the caravan. Enough that the merchants will move forward. Torcon keep the path clear as he can and the group finally passes through. They’re up to the waist by the time the caravan passes.

Day 15

On a hot afternoon, the caravan comes to a halt. Closest to the front, [[:laucian-naito | Laucian sends his owl familiar, Chelsinara, up to see what’s going on. A horse is laying in the road being beaten by its owner.It is apparent that the horse is clearly just exhausted and has been mistreated. A noble is beating it to death, yelling for it to get up, calling it a “useless nag.”

As the rest of the party approaches, they notice the noble’s guards – a knight and a mage. [[:niri | Niri]] buys the horse for 100 gold so that the party can save it. Ed note: Not revising the following sentence, which is in Katie’s words.This guy’s a real piece of dick meat. Laucian takes the horse to join his group, as he needs one. The party names the horse Benjamin. He’s not a great horse, if solid, but he’s super sweet. They will take good care of her.

Just after the party has broken camp for the night, 4 gnolles approach the camp and attach. The party deftly dispatches them.

Day 19-20

Just at camp break, harpies call out. During the skirmish, several of the party members get charmed by the harpies’ song. The party ends up scattered far and wide, chasing their respective harpies. Eventually the party manages to defeat them.

After a few uneventful days and a couple of cold rainy days, the group is soaked to the bone. The caravan arrives at an inn in a decent sized town. Igar’s Plow, a warm comfortable inn. The party requests multiple rooms but is informed they are sold out. This strikes them as odd as the common room is empty. In the corner, there is a group laughing at the adventurers. Their spread is nice, they have good wine, and appear to be nobles. Despite their taunting, the party avoids conflict, instead camping as usual.

Continuation of Day 4

Mirtul 23

The caravan is ambushed by spiders and ettercap(s?). Rudiger, previously indisposed by his caravan master, Beed Sechepol, a male half elf merchant selling ale, is able to rejoin the party. He is a basic guard for 5 gp per 10 day. (The previous wages were stated incorrectly – it is 10 gp per tenday).

The caravan in the front is maned by The Pole and a merchant. The ettercap and spider ambush is throughout the caravan, proving difficult for the party. The group manages to defeat them, but one ettercap gets away with the merchant’s horse. He insists The Pole and some of the party to go get the horse, but they refuse to send Sulesdeg on a suicide mission. Peeking into his wagon, Fen Long realizes what the merchant thinks are invaluable Kalashite silks, are actually infested with worms and therefore useless. He is Nyerhite Verther, male human, dark skin, Chondathian. Fen Long does not inform him of the problem with his freight.

Torkon notices that at least a couple of the guards from one of the guard wagons have been eyeing him and seem to be on to the party. One in particular. Fen Long and Laucian are going to try and figure out a “solution” without raising suspicion. Fen Long manages to slip him something that makes him sick and sleepy. That night, assisted by Laucian’s casting of Invisibility, he slips into the tent and smothers the guard. He manages to slip back out unnoticed.

Midday, the caravan comes upon a wagon on its side. A merchant and his guards are taking refuge behind, surrounded by hobgoblins. Suspecting a trap, the party nonetheless engages the hobgoblins when they attack the merchant and guards. They slay the hobgoblins and their captain runs away. The merchant, a noble, thanks the group profusely. He requests help getting his wagon righted, to buy some horses, and to join caravan with his guard. His name is Eloshin and he seems to be carrying spices and sundry. The party gets him hooked up to the caravan for a finders fee of 20 gp. He has plenty of money to buy horses.

The party rounds a bend in the road, hearing shouting ahead. Investigating, they find human head laying in the middle of the road. It appears that the man has been buried in the road and is unconcious, but not dead. Niri heals him and extracts him. He is dehydrated and has been exposed to the elements. Nyerhite suggests that we leave him as he has “oath breaker” carved in the dirt before him. The merchants are perturbed as the party unburies him over the course of a couple hours. Once the man is dug out, the party rests for a bit, until finally, the man is able to talk.

He was promised to marry a woman, but he broke up with her because he found out her father and brother are bandits and expected him to join their gang. Laucian thinks he’s lying, based on a check, but later finds a Harper tattoo. He gives a signal that he’s a Harper, but continues to question him for cover, and brings him along. Carlon Amoffel is his name. Carlon then rides with Laucian. He says he’s trailing the cultists, they found him out, and did this to him. He will help us when we get to Waterdeep as he is from there.

Mission: Follow the cultists without their knowing it to find out where they’re taking the loot.

After selling loot and spending a 10 day in Baldur’s Gate, the party visits a contact of the Harpers. Ackyn Selebon says he can get the adventurers introduced to some merchants that will be on the next caravan leaving town, the one that the cultists should be part of. The party tries to get hired on by one of the more reputable merchants, going to see Samardag “The Hoper.” He’s too nice and optimistic for his own good. He will hire the most of the party as body guards for 10 gp per day with pay at the end of the trip (remind Lucas). Laucian fails to impress Samardag, and instead finds a female woodelf named Edhelri Lewel who is hauling a large amount of rare Chultian wood. He shows he can levitate the heavy logs and is hired on as a bodyguard. Edhelri plans to haul the wood to Waterdeep to be made into expensive cabinetry. The day before the adventurers are to leave, they notice a person on a palanquin being carried around surveying things, trying to stay concealed. They also see cultists around serving as guards, laborers, etc. They’re dressed to blend in.

Day 1

The caravan leaves Baldur’s Gate on Myrtyl 20. The journey will take approximately 60 days. It’s a big caravan – 20 wagons or more. The cult’s wagons are separated, making sure to reveal no relationship with each other. Edhelri is concerned about the caravan reaching the Fields of the Dead. Lots of bones and undead are possible there, as it is the scene of an ancient battle. The caravan travels later into the night to get through the Fields of the Dead as quickly as possible. In the rush, one of the cult’s wagons tips over and treasure falls out of the chest. People notice and are annoyed because the caravan is held up at dusk in a dangerous area. Party members in Samardag’s employ are a few wagons behind and stay with our own so as not to be recognized by the cultists.

Laucian notices that Edhelri has had a cough all morning. Around midday, she suddenly starts coughing up lots of blood, hemorrhaging out of her orifices. He sends his owel familiar, Chelsinara, to somewhat subtly summon Niri who rushes to her side. She is dead by the time the cleric gets to her. Niri determines that Edhelri was poisoned, a well-known poison from Kalashan. One that anyone could have obtained. Laucian knows that she ate from a shared dinner with a large number of people last night. On the morning she ate individually. The party and others investigate her rations and water skin and determine she must have consumed the poison the previous night. None of her belongings seem contaminated, and it appears someone must have slipped something into her food.

Edhelri was by herself on the caravan and an argument ensues over what to do with her cargo and wagon. Samardag is arguing with an older heavy man who is claiming to know by law that the goods go to the person with the first claim. He announces that is him, Aldor Urnpoleshurst, a barrister. Samardrag counters the man’s claims are false and they should donate the proceeds of the wood to children’s charities. Another man, a tall Shaarite, is clearly listening and taking in this argument. Laucian suggests Aldor is conniving to seize the goods for his own profit, rather than legally steward them to the proper authorities. Aldor, blustering, starts accusing the party members of killing Edhelri. Fen Long intimidates the lawyer, who starts to back down.

The tall Shaarite intervenes to avoid violence. He says that everyone should agree to leave the matter to the authorities of Waterdeep. Laucian agrees to steward the wagon’s cargo, to attempt to get her workers paid, and to turn the goods over to the proper authorities, retaining no claim on the goods other than his wages. Aldor is angry, but seems just an opportunist.

The tall man who is so reasonable is named Sulesdeg “The Pole.” He is guardingLai Angesstun’s wagon(s), a gold dwarf near the front of the caravan. Laucian and Sulesdeg get along well – he does not care for Fen Long.

Tyranny of Dragons

Start Day: Tarsahk 27th

Players: Charles, Jeff, Jon, Katie

After mercilessly slaying the helpless baby dragons, the PCs explore more of the cave. They run into a couple cultists, and follow them outside the cave to be confronted by the remaining cultists. Frulam Mondath waits for them there, and tells them she must go but expects them soon to die. She then rides off on her dragon, and the PCs fight off a horde of cultists. After the fight, the PCs meet Tym, a drunken member of the cult who doesn’t seem very dedicated…or sober.They travel back to Greenest, and are given horses with which to ride 6 days to Elturgard, the capital of Elturul. There they meet Ontharr Frume who engages the PCs in some friendly games to test their mettle. They pass with flying colors, and later meet with Onthar, Leosin Erlanthar, and Ylvia who explain to the PCs that the cult’s stolen loot is moving north, through Baldur’s Gate, to destinations unknown. They want the PCs to hook up in a wagon train with the loot and find out where it is being taken.

Episode 3: Dragon Hatchery, Part 2

Start Day: Tarsahk 26th

The PCs find a new dwarven warrior named Rudy and free him. They then proceed to a shrine of Tiamat and confront Langdedrosa Cyanwrath. After some taunting, the PC gain revenge for his attack on Greenest and slay him. They then note the room is a shrine to Tiamat, showing her exiting a large volcano. They note that black dragons are over represented in the shrine. The manage to pull the chest out of the room (mostly) unharmed and then take a rest after driving off some kobolds. Next, they find the hatchery for the dragon eggs, and defeat the kobolds, roper, and drakes living there. The PCs mercilessly slaughter the black dragon eggs and the babies inside. Fen Long notes that they were probably left behind because they were so close to hatching.
